Time & Motion Study -The Traditional Way

1)     Firstly the operator observes the operation cycle to be studied and breaks it into smaller elements and writes them in sequence on a time study worksheet.

2)     The operator then starts his stopwatch at the commencement of cycle, observes the activity and the stopwatch and records the time against each element at its completion or the starting of the next element.

It is continued until all the elements are finished i.e. till the end of the cycle

3)    Once the observations have been recorded, the next step involves calculations and categorization. Mostly cumulative type stopwatch is employed i.e. at the end of each element the cumulative time since the beginning of the cycle is written against it. Therefore the difference between the successive readings is to be calculated to get the time required for each element. After this the average time required for each element is determined. Each element is then categorized as Saleable, Non-Saleable and Waste.(i.e value adding and non-value adding) and the time dedicated to these categories is calculated.

The cycle time is multiplied with the rating factor and necessary allowances are added.

4)   The data is then transferred in a readable and standard format in the record book or feeded in computer in spread sheet form.

Also for the purpose of analysis and presentation one or more of the following is prepared : sequence charts, gantt charts, pie charts graphs, diagrams, flow charts etc.
