TIME & MOTION STUDY FOR LINE BALANCING

One of the most important application of Time and Motion Study in modern day industries is of Line Balancing. A large number of industries today have product layout in which line balancing is of much importance to have effective utilization of manpower.

In this we do time study of the various operators working on a line and balance the work among them in accordance with the line tact time or line cycle time.

Timesoft simplifies the process of Time and Motion Study. For ease of line balancing we have developed another software which we have named “ LINESOFT ”.

LINESOFT

MAIN WINDOW

It requires entry of the line cycle time and saleable, non-saleable and waste element time of various operators working on the line. On clicking “Done”, Linesoft calculates the total time and its difference with the line cycle time for each operator and generates –

 i)  Bar graph or Gantt chart

ii)  Pie chart

Bar graph or Gantt chart shows the work load on each operator in terms of saleable, non-saleable and waste elements. The difference shows the ideal time available with each operator.

Pie chart shows the percentage share of saleable, non-saleable, waste elements and the difference between the line cycle time and total time for each operator.

Saleable elements - These are the actual value addition activities which directly add to the value of the product. Eg. fitting a sub-component to the main part.

Non-saleable elements - These are the activities which do not add any value to the product but are necessary for carrying out the saleable work. Eg. fitting the part in jig.

Waste element - These are the activities which neither add any value to the product nor they are necessary. Eg. walking to pick up a component.

Maximum efforts should be on reducing the waste elements. Also Non-saleable elements should be kept as less as possible so that saleable elements constitute the majority of work cycle
