Bidhan Nagar is a planned township in north east fringes of Kolkata (Calcutta). It was conceived by the second chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray and is named in his honor. He was a pioneer in many ways and this satellite township was one of the many developmental projects of the state during his time. More popularly known as Salt Lake City since it came up in an area of salt lakes. It was planned by an Yugoslav architect. The township is divided into several blocks and sectors and spreads around a hexagonal Central Park. The township has several wide, tree lined roads. There are plenty of open spaces and parks.

Bidhannagar is home to many educational institutes including campuses of the Jadavpur University, College of Leather Technology, an engineering college, research centers like the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Variable Energy Cyclotron and state and central government offices.

Bidhan Nagar is also the site of Saltlec, an electronic complex which hopes to bring in hi tech revolution to Kolkata (Calcutta) and West Bengal. Several software and electronics companies have set up shop here. While most of the buildings are around the Central Park, a central green area, some like the National Council of Science Museums are in the electronics complex.

An amusement park called the Nicco Park is located here too.

The Yuba Bharati Krirangan or the Salt Lake Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in the nation. It has a seating capacity of 120,000. Next to the complex is the Netaji Subhash Sports Institute which has several sports facilities.

The Eastern Metropolitan Bypass which extends till South Kolkata (Calcutta), connects Bidhan Nagar to Kolkata. This road has helped in extending the eastern boundary of the metropolis. Most of the new construction activity in Kolkata (Calcutta) is now around the E M Bypass. India’s first Science city with a world class convention center is one of Kolkata’s latest landmarks. New housing complexes, hotels, hospitals, industrial estates, the Satyajit Ray Film Institute have come up along this road.
