I am Biswanath Debnath. I am a anthropologist by training and a practicing resettlement specialist by profession. I work in the Regional and Sustainable Development Department of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila as a social safeguards (involuntary resettlement) specialist. For 12 years, starting from 1996 to mid-2008, I worked as an independent consultant or for consulting firms - the Louis Berger Group, and the Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt. Ltd. - on World Bank, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank and other multilaterally and bilaterally funded projects in various parts of the world as a social-poverty impact / resettlement specialist.

I was born in 1957. I was educated in Calcutta (India), New Delhi (India) and New York (USA). I took my MA and Ph.D. in social anthropology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1987.

I did a stint as a postdoctoral fellow in social demography at the University of California at Berkeley in 1988.

My work has taken me to countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Mozambique, Philippines, Thailand, and USA, in addition to my own India.

I listen to Western classical music (especially, Bach, Handel, Mozart) as well as soft American music of the 1970s and 1980s variety that I was familiar with in my student days in the USA, play harmonica, and read literature on social development issues.
My family lives in New Delhi, India, consisting of my wife (an economics professor at Dr. Zakir Husain College, Delhi University) and two daughters, who go to the Mother's International School, New Delhi.
